I was born into a family of entrepreneurs (my brother, our father, his father, and grandfather) and worked in marketing during college, then fell into audiology the day I took my grandmother in for those dreaded ‘traditional hearing aids’ from the hearing center my college golf teammates father owned at the time; and has since been purchased by me and incorporated into my growing audiology empire. Growing a small mom and pop “from scratch” in a highly competitive area wasn’t the smartest thing I’ve ever done. The first 12 months, I thought I had made the biggest mistake of my life. Frustrated and working 7 days per week with patients in the clinic and doing my administrative tasks on nights and weekends, something had to give.
I relied on my family business experience and marketing background to grow the business aggressively, but working with me wasn’t fun. I was stressed to the max, pushing my team to beyond the comfort zone and wondering when I would finally start taking home a real paycheck.
I became serious about applying tested marketing principles in order to grow the business and provide better care for our patients. We invested in staff training, our marketing results went through the roof and before I knew it, I was running one of the most-successful audiology and hearing healthcare practices in the country and making significant contributions to our community, our patients and the lives of our staff members. Today, our practice provides more to charity and staff compensation than we used to collect in yearly gross revenues. We see more new patients in one month than we used to see in a year and our appreciation for our patients and relationship with our staff members has changed dramatically. I still pinch myself daily to make sure it’s real.
As a result of our tremendous success, our phone rings off the hook with requests from doctors all over North America who want to come to my practice and “see how we do it.” In addition to requests to speak, authoring books, and writing five newsletters each month, I teach practice management seminars and technology courses throughout the country. In 2014, we started allowing doctors to visit our offices for a consulting fee and learn how we’ve massively implemented successful business concepts, marketing strategies, and staff-training programs to grow our practice to astronomical levels.
With private coaching clients a secondary aspect to our practice, I’m very proud to say that I make more money actually doing the things I teach and not simply by teaching the things I teach. So, why teach at all? Great question! It’s my way to give back. The proceeds from my private coaching clients go towards the Sound of Life Foundation for adults at increased risk of Dementia due to Hearing Loss. That’s the motivational drive behind our coaching program and the real reason why our clients are thrilled to take their practice to the next level with private coaching and practice management strategies at AuDExperts.
I don’t admit this often… but I was the class clown in high school, and truthfully wasn’t too sure what I was going to do with my life. Until I came across Audiology and realized that Hearing Health Care is my calling, my profession, my ‘reason to get out of bed everyday’. I have devoted over 12 years to advanced training to become both a Clinical Audiologist and a Neuroscientist trained at Harvard Medical School, M.I.T and at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. Currently, I am the president and founder of the Hearing & Balance Centers of New England, one of the fastest-growing specialty practices in New England, and the Founder of the Excellence In Audiology movement. I’m a speaker, teacher, author and director of the Healthy Hearing Foundation of New England, a non-profit organization for individuals (children and adults) with untreated hearing loss.
And I am honored to be part of the revolution that is helping to advance the cause of private hearing health care practices across the country. I absolutely LOVE what I get to do every day for my patients, my students, and my private coaching clients. As the only practicing Clinical Audiologist trained as a Neuroscientist, I have a unique perspective on how the brain works, how hearing relates to overall health, well-being and cognitive function, and how treating hearing loss early significantly impacts overall health and can significantly reduce the risk of developing cognitive decline and Dementia. I have the fortune of transforming lives and families every day. Treating hearing loss is not magic – it is the perfect mix of science and experience that allows us to use our skills everyday to stimulate the brain, improve cognitive function, and help patients remain independent.
I was fortunate to recently release a book on Amazon.Com, Stop Living In Isolation, that ascended to #1 New Release and #1 Best Seller within the first 30 days of being published! I believe this speaks volumes to the needs and desires of the 40,000,000 people living with untreated hearing loss who don’t’ know where to turn and want more education.
